Amritsar
Darbar Sahib, The Golden Temple, The Holiest of Holy Sikh pilgrimage sites: call it what you will, it is not to be missed. Dating back to the 16th century, The Golden Temple was built in honour of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak. Today, up to 100,000 pilgrims visit its langar (kitchen) daily, with that number increasing on weekends and special holidays. It is a feat of human hospitality and a testament to the warm and open nature of the Sikh religion. Under an hour’s drive from Amritsar, the pomp and splendour of The Wagah Border ceremony is worth witnessing. Best visited between November and February.
