Pondicherry
Pondicherry, Puducherry, or ‘Pondy’ as it is affectionately known by its locals, offers a little bit of Provence washed up on the shores of Southernmost India. With an excellent café culture, it is home to a population of artists, bohemians, and the best croissants in India. Under French rule until 1954 many of its inhabitants still speak French (and English with a charming French accent). Promenade along the promenade or explore its cobbled streets and crumbling colonial architecture by bike, an excellent way to explore this pedestrian-friendly town. Also known for the famed Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and the experimental township of Auroville. Very hot in the summer, the best time to visit is between November and February.
